Alumni
Welcome to the alumni website of Alpine.
President Sybil Hofmann’s Speech at the Alpine Center Alumni Reunion on 8 March 2006 at the campus hotel, Glyfada, Greece
Distinguished Alumni and Dear Friends,
Welcome home! Your homecoming means a lot to us. It energizes us. It’s also lovely to welcome former Alpine staff including Marilena Moumouri, Effie Tsopanian, Olga Lambrianidou, and Nick Tsorakidis
An alumni event such as this offers you an opportunity for re-establishing old ties, meeting new family members, and networking for career opportunities. It also gives us the opportunity to recognize you and to congratulate you on your achievements. You make us proud.
As you look around our campus, many things will look familiar and will evoke nostalgia—Chris Philotheou (Class of 1992) reminds me every time we meet of the times he and his friends would jump off the balconies to go out and have a good time after curfew hours.
But you will also notice some real changes. The campus hotel has been beautifully renovated, the Learning Resource Center is bigger and better, the classrooms are more attractive, and the programs of study have evolved with the times to meet the changes in the industry. We remain ‘distinctively Swiss’ although we now offer British undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.
Alpine remains a dynamic institution and regarded as the leading hotel management school in Greece and one of the best in Europe. Our motto is still: WE DEVELOP LEADERS for the hospitality, Tourism and Service Industries. The proof is in the pudding, as the Brits would say, or right here in front of us. You are our valued alumni. We’re so happy to have helped shape your future.
So what’s new at Alpine, very briefly, as I know the purpose of this reunion is to reunite. We have new partner institutions. In Switzerland, we have formed an academic partnership with DCT International Hotel & Tourism Management School in Lucerne, the Global Education Alliance. DCT validates our own programs of study, unlike IHTTI which used to franchise their own. IHTTI has been bought by SEG in Switzertland and of course we wish them all the best.
In Britain we also have a new partner. After four very successful years of partnership with Bournemouth University, we now work with the second largest degree awarding university in the UK, the University of Wales which also validates our undergraduate and postgraduate programs.
We also are honoured to have a new Academic Dean, Dr Michael Lefever, who together with an outstanding faculty ensure that we offer the highest quality of programs of study. Dr Lefever has been a distinguished professor here at Alpine in the past, and our Lefever Library is named after his generous donation of books and journals. He is a researcher and a prolific writer and his mission is to upgrade our programs of study with emphasis on the research and dissertation modules.
We have been able to attract and retain the finest international faculty although Ken Lord and Dr Green have now retired, while Mr Tsemberas has returned to industry. Ms Marie Connolly in Ireland, and Mr Brian Cogan, former F&B Manager, send you their kind regards.
As for our leading role in the Greek community, Alpine is most fortunate to have on board Ms Georgia Kollia as our marketing manager. Ms Kollia is organizing first-class events that will surely bring Alpine to the limelight. Next week we are hosting a very important conference, in collaboration with Kariera SA, on “Tourism is our Future” featuring five keynote speakers and leaders in the industry. This conference is aimed at attracting young people to choose hospitality & tourism as a career since the demand is quickly outpacing the supply. As Alpine Ambassadors, we hope you will continue to refer potential students to your alma mater.
We are offering professional development opportunities for people in the industry including our alumni. One such event is coming up on 18 March and it’s an 8-hour seminar on e-Commerce delivered by an outstanding instructor. Don’t forget to register before you leave!
We are becoming more and more international and welcoming students now from all over the globe: This year we have students from China, Russia, Ukraine, Jordan, Lebanon, Sultanate of Oman, USA, Canada, Zambia, South Africa, Mexico and many countries in Europe.
All these activities and enhancements of our programs will ensure that we remain the premier Swiss Business School for Hotel and Tourism Management Education in Greece, attracting talented students and developing them into tomorrow’s leaders. However, what really makes us successful is you, our dear ALUMNI. Indeed, a great institution can only measure its worth by its alumni. Keep up the excellent and distinctive Alpine Spirit!
You have played a steadfast and supportive role and I thank you for your continuing contributions. Please always stay in touch. We appreciate it when you approach us with your ideas and feedback, or when you come offering to work with us. We’re so delighted to have two of our alumni working with us in management positions: Michalis Orontis and Dimitris Perrakis. We’re also very happy to work with Jordan Eliades who manages the Global Management & Services recruitment and selection company. But the biggest reward is when alumni are present at our Career Days interviewing and recruiting students and graduates.
We also love it when you send us photos of your weddings or your newly born babies. You can be sure that Mr Hofmann and I feel like Yaya and Papoo now.
In closing I’d like to thank the current students of Alpine who participated in organizing this remarkable event, Emil Goetsch, president of the Alpine Student Council and brother of Roman Goetsch who flew all the way from Tunisia to be with us tonight. Thanks to Chef Rudi Luetolf and Food and beverage Manager Scott Morse, our Executive Housekeeper Ms McGlade, our maintenance engineer, Valdi Dollija, our Hotel Operations Manager, Dimitris Perrakis and the Organizing Committee consisting of Michalis Orontis, Vivi Papadopulou, Theoni Assimakopoulou and Desiree Baroudy.
Thank you all for joining us! Let us all take pride in continuing to move Alpine forward! Enjoy this beautiful evening.
